Joan Baker - Voice Over Diva - Bad Interview

I’m sorry, but this is possibly the WORST morning show interview I’ve ever seen. Now, before I rip it apart, I want to make sure I’m clear about one thing…I TOTALLY respect Joan Baker and I actually just ordered her book on Amazon. She is a very talented woman and what she did in her book was fabulous and I’m very much looking forward to reading it.That said…WHO IS THIS WOMAN THAT INTERVIEWED JOAN — Gigi? SHE IS HORRIBLE!!! Joan has been so much more interesting and informative about voice over, being a voice talent, the life of a voice over actor, etc. in other interviews, but here the interviewer made her sound like a freakin’ moron. I’m sorry for Joan that she had to endure this tragic interview. At the same time Joan’s answers to questions like “what is the secret to voice-over?” kind of rambled on and didn’t make much sense. “So it does take a lot of courage, and it does take a lot of fearlessness, or naivety…haha” Ummm, I’m sorry Joan, what? Joan that comment escapes me.

Voice over, like anything in the entertainment industry, takes a lot of hard work and a lot of practice, and a lot of determination. Naivety doesn’t really fit in with a working voice over performer. “Ummm, yeah so I’ve never done this before, but people tell me I have a great voice for voice over so where do I sign up?” If that’s the naivety she’s referring to than it makes sense in terms of people thinking they can do voice over without much work.

She couldn’t be more correct in the misconceptions of voice over so at least that part of this SIX MINUTE INTERVIEW is worth hearing if you’re interested in learning about the world of voice over.

Why didn’t anyone tell Joan not to touch her chest!?! Woman, you have a microphone on! Hello, you work with a microphone all day…shouldn’t she be used to that?

She brings up ISDN which is only encouraging people who shouldn’t be in the voice over business to investigate ISDN. You have no reason to put an ISDN box in your home unless you are a VERY established voice over talent. I have ISDN and sometimes I wonder why. Yes, I do use it, but not nearly as much as I would like to be using it.

Gigi really needs help with her interviews. She jumps all over the place and all she really wanted to hear was Joan doing her voices…which sound like crap because Joan is working with a lapel microphone and not a Neumann. Sultry sexy voice doesn’t really come off all that well when the microphone is the size of your thumb. It’s kind of hard to pull off the low end sound.

Overall a very WEIRD interview, funny, informative (sort of) and disturbing all at once.

Be sure to check out Joan’s website because she does boast an impressive resume of work and her demos are top notch.
