The best play I’ve ever seen…

August: Osage County PosterRachael and I saw this show last night. Now I know one would think I’m biased because of my Chicago origins and all of the connections this play has to Chicago. BUT, that only convinced me to purchase the tickets and I can honestly say I had low expectations for the show and was ABSOLUTELY blown away by it.

THIS SHOW IS LITERALLY THE BEST PIECE OF THEATRE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.

The script was a remarkable piece of modern playwriting, the cast was superb from top to bottom, the staging was wonderfully intricate, engaging, and unusual all at the same time (I’ve never seen so many actors backs in a show before and not been distracted by it…if anything it added to the piece), the use of the set fascinating, the comedy and drama mix was perfect, and it was just all around the best piece of Theatre I’ve ever seen.

If you’re in New York PLEASE go see it and post a comment. I know you won’t be disappointed. If this doesn’t win the Tony for best new play then never again will I give the Tony’s any merit.

The one actress who really stood out to me, for more reasons than will list here, was Deanna Dunagan. Rachael and I had the privilege of sharing a drink with Deanna after a performance of another play in Chicago at Steppenwolf and she is just a local theatre actress who loves Chicago and has really not ventured out beyond the Windy City. I hope and pray she gets the recognition she deserves in this piece. She is outstanding.

OK…one other person to mention…Amy Morton…YOU ROCK…it’s like a lesson in stage acting watching her perform in the role of Barbara, the oldest daughter.

You have to mention Rhondi Reed as well! I mean, let’s face it, there wasn’t a weak link in the show…all were brilliant, truly, but I really loved Rhondi’s performance and range throughout.
Great blog…well written. You’re quite a talent Mr. Swanson.

Can we also mention that not only is this play the best thing we’ve ever seen, but also affordable? Such a deal. I am a huge supporter of the show, as well as Joshua Swanson’s blogging skills
